Troy Mattern | Head Coach

Troy Mattern will be entering his 3rd year as the Head Football Coach at Shanley High School. The Deacons finished the 2018 with an 11-0 record and the AA State Championship with their win over Bismarck St. Mary’s. In Coach Mattern’s 2 years at Shanley, the Deacons have went 22-1 with their only loss coming in the 2017 State Championship game. Prior to Shanley, Coach Mattern spent 13 seasons as a member of the Fargo South coaching staff. 2010 marked his first year as Head Coach as he led the Bruins to an 11-1 record and the North Dakota AAA Championship. The Bruins also won the State Championship in 2013. Prior to 2010 season, Mattern was an assistant coach at South for six seasons where the Bruins competed in the state championship game each of those seasons winning State Titles in 2004, 2006, 2007. In 2011, Coach Mattern was Head Coach of the Badlands Bowl and in 2012 and 2014 he was Head Coach of 11 Man East in the annual Shrine game. In 2012 and 2017, Coach Mattern was named State Coach of the Year and in 2016 was named EDC Coach of the Year. Coach Mattern and his wife Jamie, have 4 children, twins Lydia and Cooper who will be going into 11th grade, Jax will be going into 6th grade, and Ily into 3st grade. A native of Warroad, MN, Troy is a member of the Warrior Athletic Hall of Fame
